Driving Anxiety: What Causes It?

You know, most people, when they first seek out some help for their driving anxiety, want to focus on what caused it to start in the first place. Maybe they have a fear of driving over bridges, maybe they have highway driving anxiety, or anxiety attacks while driving far away from home…whatever the fear, they desperately want to know WHY ME?

Don’t sign up for that class. Driving anxiety could be caused by almost a limitless number of factors, and you’ll never truly know for sure what the actual cause is, plus it wouldn’t matter if you did.

Maybe your anxiety while driving is caused because of genetic factors, like the rest of your family are anxious people too or maybe even your mom never drove. Perhaps you have anxiety when driving because you fear a loss of control because your dad was an alcoholic and abusive. Maybe you suffer from anxiety about driving because you were potty trained too harshly or watched too much Gilligan’s Island, or smoked too much pot, or drink too much orange juice! What’s the difference why?

Forget about why you have the challenge, and don’t look for someone to blame. You’ve got whatever cards you’ve been dealt and all you can do know is decide how to play them. Will you let your driving anxiety make your decisions in life or will you seize control back and start deciding the path your life takes because of what you’re running TOWARDS instead of AWAY FROM? Are you going to spend you days complaining about your childhood or ex-husband or politics, or whatever else you want to blame for your current state or will you take it by the throat and give it a shake and kick it out of your life and scream “I’m DONE with it!”

I’m not trying to belittle the reasons you may have driving anxiety or make light of them, I know they’re serious and real, and some of the above are my own. But when it’s all said and done, nobody cares. Sad but true. This is YOUR life to do with what you will, driving anxiety and all. No matter what the cause of your current situation is, the solution is the same, so direct your attention on the remedy, not the cause you can’t do anything about. It’s a much better use of your energy and I think you’ll feel a lot more in control of yourself and your life, both on and off the road, if you take that perspective.
