Statistic tell the story...or do they?
As the creator of the most widely used program for conquering driving anxiety anywhere, you can imagine I get more than a few emails on the subject.
One of the things that I always have a bit of a tough time explaining to people is that even though they may have heard otherwise, driving IS NOT dangerous. Not by a long shot.
What? Surely I’ve went off the deep end this time.
I mean, you’ve probably heard that motor vehicle accidents are a fairly common cause of death, right? Maybe not as high as obesity or cancer, but certainly up there...
So it can seem to people with a fear of driving that their anxiety is justified! I mean, getting into your car for your daily commute is like playing Russian roulette (or so it seems).
I’m not going to lie to you, accidents while driving ARE a leading cause of death, but we need to keep that in perspective. The fact is, it’s a leading cause of death because we live in such an incredibly safe environment overall!
It’s been reported that your chances of getting into a fatal car accident are 1 in 6500.
Jeesh, that sounds grim doesn’t it?
At first glance it sounds like those are terrible and frightening odds only because we’re used to things being a million to one, or ten million to one...things like winning the lottery or contracting Mad Cow disease.
But let’s look at what that really means...
Let’s say you lived in a very large neighborhood, that has 162 homes in it, and for the sake of simplicity, each home has four people living in it.
Every morning, each and every one of those people form a giant line by the interstate, all 650 of them, and each take turns running across the highway.
And once every 10 YEARS, one of them gets hit by a car.
Those are your odds. Seems a little different than this looming danger it’s sometimes made out to be isn’t it?
Now I know that clearing that up may not make you feel much better of driving, especially if you have an ongoing struggle with driving anxiety. That’s because anxiety and fear don’t have much to do with logic and reason, so statistics rarely help. My Driving Fear Program addresses fear on a much more core, GUT level, that can really help you put your fear of driving behind you and get you back to your life.
Start the program if you think it’s appropriate for you, but keep the reality in mind when you hear these “frightening” statistics!
